Notes Built in 1875 by John D. Stewart and known as" The Stewart House" it was described as "The New Brick Hotel" and a "first-class Boarding House...built of brick--60x80 feet, three stories high...[contained] twenty-five Bedrooms and a Parlor on the second and third floors, with an Office, Reading Room, a large dining Room and a Store Room on the first floor" (from The Monroe Enquirer, Oct. 5, 1875, pg. 3, col. 1). As the building changed hands it would also be known as "The Central Hotel" and "The Bickett House" (1917). A fire on or about January 28, 1925* destroyed most of the third floor. The fire was contained only to the hotel building and originated on the top floor. As of 2012 the remaining original two floors (and possibly part of the third floor) still stand.
