Notes

The Shute Municipal Airport* was near where the Bi-Lo sits at Dickerson and Charlotte Avenue (Old Charlotte).   Ray Shute and Henry Adams leased the former pasture area from Roland Helms and formed the "Union Aircraft Corporation".   This was not their first endeavor, as they had an airstrip in 1926 on Highway 75 not far past the Newtown Road intersection.

*named after Ray Shute's son, J. Ray "Sonny" Shute III, who died in a plane crash near Monroe on May 4, 1947.  Co-pilot, Gerald A. Simpson, also died as a result of the crash.
