Description This U S O building on Main Street opened April 16, 1943. Per
"The Monroe Enquirer" December 28, 1944, "three-quarters of a million
people" used the Club within the first 20 months. This building was
later used as the Recreation Center (mostly for teens) after WWII.
Later the building was demolished around 1970 during the 'urban renewal'
of that area which cut off the lower portion of Main Street at today's
present Jefferson Street. |

Notes The first U S O in Monroe was set-up on the 2nd floor of an existing building known as the Masonic Building built by the Shute brothers on Franklin in 1908 (now demolished, it was at the corner of Franklin and Beasley streets, behind the Monroe Opera House). The very first U S O in the country was organized by Ms. Ely , sister of Mrs. Tiffany of New York. 5/13/83 The statement in italics has not been verified.
