Notes The first Belk Store opened in Monroe, NC in 1888. From "William Henry Belk: Merchant of the South" by Le Gette Blythe (1950), pages 38-39, Belk recalls the first store: "I opened for business on May 29, 1888. I called my store the New York Racket...The reason I named it the New York Racket, I reckon, was because New York was a big city and I figured that by calling it the New York Racket everybody would think that sounded big..."
