Notes It is believed that the last surviving Union County veteran was James A. Lowery of the 48th NC Regiment, Co. A (per Monroe Enquirer dated January 29, 1942, page 1). He was still living in Florida in January 1942. Reuben James died March 23, 1940 in Union County and was buried at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in the New Salem area.
