Description

Flint Ridge c1992 - A Rosenwald School
Part of the funds to build this school came from the Rosenwald Fund program for providing schools for rural blacks.
Julius Rosenwald, president of Sears, roebuck and Co., was inspired by the work of Booker T. Washington at Tuskeegee Institute in Alabama and developed a keen interest in education for rural blacks.

Notes

This Rosenwald school building plan was known as a "Two-teacher type".  The community raised $700.00, Public funds added $1,765.00 and the Rosenwald fund added $700.00.   The school sat on two acres of land.  The photo here appears to the front with the double entrance, however, the three windows that were originally on the very front expanded portion are not present.  Some efforts were made around 1992 to preserve this building but those efforts did not succeed.

(information about building plan and funds comes from Fisk University's Rosenwald Database - main site is http://rosenwald.fisk.edu - search only by state and then scroll their excellent list with photos!)
