Notes A photo of a restaurant (unidentified) and this Pure gas station (together on the same side of 74) appears in the Home News' Wingate Centennial Special (p. 8, Sept. 27, 2001) - time period around 1930 . Per a former resident, the Pure station sat on the south side of 74 (or the 'non-college' side). Other notes within library files (UCVF: Wingate History) include that the station was owned by Wayne Edwards. The gravity-fed gas pumps indicate the station was most likely built in the 1920s (July 1925 Sanborn Map does not show this station, therefore probably built after 1925). The man in the photo has been identified by his son and nephew as Benson Bivens who worked at the Pure Station before WWII (after the war, he worked at the ESSO which was located on the North side of 74 (where the current McDonald's is). In 1966 the address for Edwards Pure Oil was listed as 101 Monroe Road - West. (Monroe Road being 74) The addresses on this portion of 74 have since been renumbered. Time period and notes revised August 3, 2012- pmp |
