Of particular interest in this photo are the four pieces of furniture - the pulpit (referred to as a 'lectern' today), the communion table, and the two chairs (hidden by palms). This [oak?] furniture was constructed by hand by the Rev. John E. King, adept at carpentry, and minister at First Baptist of Monroe, NC from 1879 - 1881. (per "First Baptist Church Monroe, NC 1852-1989") It was during his time here in Monroe that he also built and designed Wesley Chapel Methodist Church after their former building was lost to a fire. The Monroe Enquirer of May 24, 1879, p. 4: "The building was erected by the Rev. J. E. King of Monroe, and reflects great credit upon his skill--both as an architect and builder." Rev. King was the son of a carpenter, Joseph King and his wife Elizabeth (maiden name unknown at this time). Born in North Carolina, perhaps the Onslow County area, he married Martha A. Hill on April 16, 1854 in New Hanover County, NC. They had at least six children with the youngest, Martha, being born here, c1879 (age 1 on the 1880 census, NC, Union County, Monroe, stamped page #320). Per information found at the New Hanover County Public Library, Rev. King died January 31, 1909 and was buried at Swansboro (Missionary Baptist? - this was penciled into my notes). The furniture is still at First Baptist Church today but no longer used within the sanctuary. -Written by Patricia Poland, February 28, 2014
