| Stokes Helms was born in 1926 to
E.L. Helms, Sr. and Venie Helms. He attended Unionville High School from 1932 to 1944. Helms then entered the US Navy in 1944 and held the rank of SC 1. He remained in the Navy until 1946 and served in the Pacific Theater during the war. Helms first wife, Margaret Neil, is now deceased. He is remarried to Barbara Brooks. He has two children Tammie Darlene Minnettee and Dennis Stokes Helms. During World War II, Helms had four brothers in the service. On the one mile section of Highway 601 where Helms lived eighteen boys were drafted and none were killed. |
